The Reverend Jessica K. Hitchcock, Rector
As Rector, Jessica’s primary responsibility is to equip God’s people for ministry in the world. To that end, she prepares for and presides at worship services, offers pastoral care and education opportunities, and spends time praying, researching, studying, and talking with others to allow ample opportunities for God to inspire a vision for what God is dreaming of for St. Luke’s. Jessica also serves as a sort of director for the small nonprofit organization that St. Luke’s is, leading the staff and volunteers as we seek to live into God’s dream for our community. On Sundays, Jessica is focused on welcoming folks who are new to St. Luke’s and preparing for worship. She is happy to talk with you about pastoral issues - both celebrations and concerns - on Sunday morning but if you need to schedule an appointment or do substantial business, email is your best bet. Please text, call, or email Jessica if you or someone in the parish needs pastoral care.
Jessica grew up in Southwest Georgia, graduated from Virginia Theological and was ordained in 2006. She has served in various churches in Montgomery County and DC. She lives in the Forest Glen neighborhood of Silver Spring with her elementary age daughter and woodworker/computer software engineer husband and as many cats as he will allow her to take in.
The Reverend Lesley Krauland, Deacon
The Rev. Lesley Krauland is a native of Alexandria, VA. While growing up she attended St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church in Old Town and St. Agnes Episcopal School. Lesley is a graduate of Mount Holyoke College, has a Master’s in Social Work from Catholic University, and is currently a student at Wesley Seminary at American University. She was received into the Episcopal Church in 1990 at St. Patrick’s Episcopal Church, D.C., where also she married her husband, Ed Krauland, and her four boys, ages 16-24, were baptized. Before having children, Lesley worked in Social Work at Prince George’s Hospital Center and Psychiatric Center, Chartered in Brookland. Prior to being ordained to the diaconate in September 2018, Lesley was a stay-at-home mom, an active member of St. Patrick’s, the retreat manager for the EDOW Diocesan Retreat Committee, and an active volunteer in her boys’ schools. For one year, Rev. Lesley served as deacon at Church of the Epiphany D.C., supporting the Welcome Table and Street Church. Lesley enjoys hiking, travel, gardening, cooking, music, art, entertaining, and people of all ages. It will be wonderful to join St. Luke’s!
Sarah Horick, Minister of Music, Liturgy, and Communications
Sarah Horick, Minister of Music, Liturgy, and Communications: Sarah joined the St. Luke’s staff in Lent of 2016 as the Minister of Music, and then became the Minister of Music & Liturgy in Spring of 2018. Now Sarah is adding communications to her portfolio of work at St. Luke’s! Sarah partners with Jessica in creating the worship liturgies at St. Luke’s, and is lead on bulletin creation. She also oversees all of the musical programming at St. Luke’s including the adult choir and the instrumentalists. In addition to week-to-week preparation, she also works toward a long-term programming development. Sarah will now be creating the weekly enews & hot news publications, managing our website & social media, and exploring how we can create a 20 or so minute weekly podcast with highlights from Sunday worship.If you have an announcement for the parish, please have those to email@example.com by Tuesday 5 pm the week before you want them shared. Earlier is even better!
Sarah lives with her husband, daughter, son, and her son’s model trains in Silver Spring.
Kim Desmond, Parish Administrator
Kim Desmond is the newest member of our St. Luke’s staff. Kim will be working remotely over the summer, and will begin a 30 hr work week in the office the Tuesday after Labor Day. Kim will manage the office, coordinate the care and use of our building and grounds, offer Jessica organizational support, and work closely with the Treasurer, Contributions Officer, and Assistant Treasurer to ensure that our financial records are accurately maintained. Soon, Kim will be your point person for all things financial at St. Luke’s.
If you need to reserve space in the St. Luke’s building, please email Kim as soon as possible. The building can get full with all the different organizations that use our space! If you see something in the building or on the grounds in need of attention, please let Kim know - but also consider if it is something you can handle yourself. This *OUR* building - all of us; it is beautiful, it is home, it is refuge and we are blessed to have had it passed down to us by the previous generation. We can all do our part to take care of it.
Kim graduated from the University of Southern California with an MBA in marketing. Before moving to the area in 2005, Kim lived and worked in Boston as a financial analyst for a national dairy company with over $2 billion in sales. She loves to travel and her and her family did extensive travel in Europe while living in Frankfurt, Germany for 4 years. Kim shares her time and home with her middle school-aged daughter, her elementary-aged son, her husband and their large shepherd/lab mix aptly named Wiley.
